Social Awareness #2

For a ELA assignment, I was asked to write about a social issue I feel strongly for. For me, it was a hard task. I can't just find one topic and just say, "okay, this is a issue I feel strongly for". No. Some issues can't just be ignored, every issue affects us in some way. One issue that I feel that I can strongly connect to is cyber-bullying. Yes, everyone, anywhere, with any kind of social internet access, has been, or is a victim of cyber-bullying. Its not fun, 1 out of 3 teens have been, or are a victim of cyber bullying.

Bullying. Some people think of it as a serious threat, and some people don't take it seriously. Over the years it became as simple as to giving someone a dirty look, to getting tossed around, and in modern times, sending someone a dirty, nasty text message or Facebook message. Its commonly known as Cyber-Bullying. Cyber meaning a prefix that means "computer" or "computer network," and Bullying meaning a person to do violence to another.

The first article I read, was from The Telegraph. It talked about how Government are protecting victims from serious cyber-bully threats. The article said that government is thinking about creating this "cyber tag" technology, that can really prevent cyber-bullies from going out of control. Also, by getting these "cyber-specialists" to actually go on the internet, and look at these bullies, and get them of the internet. I think that this article has two sides to it. I think that it is showing us citizens, that government is actually trying to reduce the amount of people getting cyber-bullied, but then, its saying we can't have negative thoughts and speak up, or say our opinion online. I feel like its really up to a persons opinion on how to respond to this article.

The second article I read, was from Stamford Advocate, and it talked about how kids, simple kids like us here in 51, spoke up, and said they want more from a bullying policy. I feel like this article mostly impacts kids that did get cyber-bullied, but just never spoke up, and took their life, or are still getting threatened. Everyone who has a heart, and understands what its like to be a cyber-bully victim, at any stage of threat, understands that telling someone, a friend, adult or even sibling, is the first thing to do. To have these kids speak up, and say that they want more if they get cyber-bullied, is a big step. It shows that kids, basic citizens like each and everyone of us, want to have stronger rights, and to have stronger consequences on people that want to impact or minimize our rights.
