So sadly, I finished The Heights . It was an amazing book. I realized that throughout the entire book, Hedges wanted to show that we don't realize what we really have, until we lose it. Yes, almost every book we read, the main idea of it is to show that we shouldn't take what we have in out life for granted.
The reason this book really supported this statement, was because it wasn't in just one persons view, it was in two separate peoples view, Tim and Kate, who are both married. The beginning of the story, Tim felt like his marriage and his duty as a father was falling apart, so he took a one year off from his job, to let Kate grow her career, and for him to get to have more father bonding time with his two kids, Teddy and Sam. That all changes when he meets Anna Broady, he starts realizing that she is getting a bit too close with him, and they are both married.
Tim realizes this the awkward way. He almost had a affair with Anna, they decide to have a "weekend" in a really expensive hotel in the middle of the city. They planned on letting everything behind, but then when Anna doesn't show up, Tim really realizes what he was doing. He was risking his entire family, for this one woman, who's husband was having a affair with her, and she was jealous of Kate, for having such a amazing Husband. He realizes that all he really has to do, is figure out who he is. Who he is to his sons, his wife, to his father, his students, and many other people.
Katie has a affair with Tim in the story. She had a affair with a college crush (who is now a tv star on some ABC show), in Disney Land. Tim doesn't like Jeff (the guy Katie had the affair with) because he really really likes her, invites her (NOT TIM) to dinner, gets toys for the two boys, and exceeds Kate's expectations. They had a romantic dinner, and Jeff told Kate all his feelings about her, and then they had sex. Kate wasn't thinking about Tim, because Tim said Annas name when they were having sex. It pissed Kate off alot. But then when Kate was done with Jeff, she saw a note on the floor, reading it, it looked like it was a complete set-up just to get Kate in bed with him. She realized what a jerk he is, and what she has just done to Tim.
In both Tim and Kates situations, they realized that what they really really wanted, wasn't as important as what they have now.
Oh really sounds coool
